Community Notice: West Nile Virus Mosquito Sample Detected

Winnebago, NE - The Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska has been notified that a mosquito sample collected within the community boundaries of the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska has tested positive for West Nile virus. 

At this time, this means the virus has been detected in a mosquito in the boundaries of the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska. It does not mean that a human case has been identified in our community. However, the positive test serves as an important reminder to take precautions to reduce the risk of mosquito bite. 

Residents are encouraged to:
• Use an EPA registered insect repellant (with Deets) when spending time outdoors. DEET is considered the suggested standard for insect repellent because it provides long-lasting, broad spectrum protection against mosquitoes, ticks, and other biting bugs by disorienting their sensory receptors so they cannot locate humans.
• Wear long sleeves and long pants, especially during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.
• Remove standing water from around your home, including buckets, bird baths, flowerpots, gutters, and other containers where mosquitoes can breed.
• Ensure windows and doors screens are in good repair to help keep mosquitoes out of your home. 

The Mą̄ką cīnąk wōgijire ra (Winnebago Public Health Department) will continue to monitor mosquito activity and work continue to work with other local public health partners as appropriate. 

Most people infected with West Nile virus do not become ill, but may develop symptoms such as fever, headaches, body aches, rash or fatigue. In rare cases, serious neurological illness can occur. Anyone experiencing severe symptoms should seek medical attention immediately.
