WCHS Strengthens Emergency Preparedness Through Trainings

Winnebago, NE – Winnebago Comprehensive Healthcare System (WCHS) recently took part in emergency preparedness trainings aimed at strengthening response efforts. These trainings help ensure staff stay up to date on best practices and are prepared to respond effectively in emergencies, supporting overall community health and safety.

Last week, over 30 employees participated in a Regional Medical Response Surge Functional Exercise, placing teams in a realistic scenario involving civil unrest and a sudden influx of patients. The exercise focused on testing emergency response plans and strengthening communication. Departments also worked through simulated challenges such as staffing shortages, security concerns, and resource management in a real-time environment.

This past month, WCHS also facilitated a Hospital Decontamination workshop, which combined virtual learning with hands-on training. Participants gained critical skills in identifying hazardous materials exposure, properly using personal protective equipment (PPE), and establishing decontamination zones. The training also included a live scenario where teams practiced setting up decontamination equipment and safely responding to mock patients in a controlled environment.

“These trainings are essential to ensuring our teams are ready to respond quickly and effectively in high-pressure situations,” said Jesse Padilla, WCHS Safety Officer. “We are strengthening our collective ability to respond to a wide range of emergency scenarios.”

Both exercises highlight an ongoing commitment to preparedness and patient safety. By investing in these exercises, WCHS continues to build a stronger, more resilient healthcare system ready to respond to a wide range of emergency scenarios.
