Sexual Assault Nurse Exam
Our SANE program is here to provide immediate and respectful care to survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence. Our specially trained nurses offer medical support 24/7 in a safe, culturally sensitive, and survivor-centered environment.
What is SANE?
SANE stands for Sexual Assault Nurse Exam.
WCHS nurses are trained to deliver specialized care that includes:
-
Trauma-informed, culturally competent medical services
-
Forensic evidence collection (commonly known as a “rape kit”)
-
Support and advocacy tailored to the needs of each survivor
You do not need an appointment to receive help. You can walk into our Emergency Room at any time for assistance.
When to Seek Help
If you or a relative has experienced sexual assault or domestic violence, we encourage you to seek care as soon as possible. Medical treatment can support your healing and, if you choose, help preserve evidence. You are welcome to walk into our Emergency Room at any time, day or night.
We recommend that forensic exams take place within five days of the incident, and toxicology kits—used when drug-facilitated assault is suspected—are most effective within four days. Even if you’re unsure about what happened or whether to pursue legal action, it’s okay to come in and speak with someone. There is no pressure to decide anything right away.
What Happens During the Exam
Your physical well-being comes first. If you have any injuries, they will be treated before anything else begins. The exam itself is performed by a SANE nurse and typically lasts between two and eight hours, depending on your needs and what you are comfortable with.
If you choose to undergo a forensic exam, the nurse may collect samples from areas where evidence could be present, such as the mouth, genitals, or skin. Injuries may be documented with photographs, and your clothing might be collected. You’ll be asked if you’ve had recent consensual sex, so we can distinguish any unrelated DNA. If you think drugs may have been involved, we may conduct a toxicology screen. You may also be offered emergency contraception and STI testing.
You can bring a trusted friend or support person with you. If you'd like, a medical advocate can be called to help explain your options and offer emotional support—but using an advocate is entirely up to you.
Aftercare and Ongoing Support
Once the exam is complete, we won’t leave you to figure out the next steps alone. Our Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault Program provides holistic, survivor-centered support. This includes access to emergency shelter, transportation, referrals to legal and counseling services, and culturally grounded therapy and healing services. Whether you’re looking for a safe place to stay, someone to talk to, or help navigating your options, we’re here to walk with you.
